Not Made in China?

November 14th, 2007, 1:51 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Michael Doss

Around the same time I effectively went vegan, I stopped buying products made in China, both for safety reasons (product quality and contaminated components are issues for me), as well as human rights issues (there’s almost no way to check working conditions for these factories). For the most part, this is easier than I thought it would be, though I’ve had to give up cheap toys and goods bought on a whim.

I’m also “lucky” in that I don’t buy a lot of electronics anymore - they’re not something I should be spending my money on. That said, my cell phone is literally falling apart after repeated drops, baby attacks, and plastic degradation.  I most certainly need a new one.

What to do?

All the phones I’ve looked at are made in China, and I have a suspicion that even if a phone says it’s made somewhere else, a majority of the components are Chinese made. Do I have options? Will I have to buy one used so I can say I’m not directly supporting something I want to boycott? Have any of you looked and found answers? I want to hear from you.
